The WISE Guide for Spelling - SOLD OUT
Author: Wanda Sanseri
The WISE Guide for Spelling is an acronym for Words, Instruction, & Spelling Enrichments. The book includes 1500 high-frequency words and 500 commonly misspelled words (plus hundreds of derivatives) as a core list for teaching the foundational principles of English spelling.
Instructions. Two pages of lesson plan ideas are provided for every twenty words. The first page gives preliminary warm-up drills as well as sample sentences for each word (quotes of famous people, excerpts from literature, or instructive comments). The facing page shows each word divided into syllables and marked for spelling rules. Information is given to help explain spelling words.
Spelling Enrichments. Optional creative spelling reinforcements replace boring, passive activities like copying a word five times. The student can take the new words taught and practice using them in a variety of ways that simultaneously teach other valuable concepts.
Enrichment activities cover many areas:
| composition | grammar | Greek/Latin roots |
| synonyms | derivatives | keyboard instruction |
| etymology | contractions | compound words |
| alphabetizing | punctuation | figures of speech |
| homonyms | analogies | comparisons |
| oxymorons | antonyms | verb conjugation |
| poetry | plurals | subject/verb agreement |
| possession | appositives | games |
| art work | letter writing | descriptive writing |
| dictation | vivid words | creative writing |
| pantomime | deaf signing | alliteration |
