Spell to Write and Read

Author: Wanda Sanseri

Many highly intelligent people never learn to read from methods now in vogue. Even fewer people spell well. We have been told that once you learn to read, spelling will happen naturally. Not true. Reports show that the biggest deficiency of 90% of entering college freshmen is spelling. Simultaneously, steadily decreasing SAT scores reveal that reading comprehension skills have also dropped.

Spell to Write and Read students master spelling as the stepping stone to improve writing and reading. We train them to accurately sound out and spell scientifically chosen words ranging from K through college level. The students think words by sound rather than letter names. Our system produces both superior spellers and excellent readers in all types of learners.

Most of us learned an incomplete form of phonics riddled with exceptions. We blamed the language not knowing that English is highly logical IF presented properly. Spell to Write and Read (SWR) is the overall step-by-step Teacher’s Manual which covers our philosophy, teacher preparation, pointers for preparing preschoolers, reading aloud, evaluating achievement levels, and teaching penmanship with phonograms. The manual illustrates, in scripted detail, our spelling dictation process, covers instructions and examples for teaching the spelling rule reference pages, provides ideas for reading assignments, explains ways to improve comprehension skills, teaches you how to help refine composition skills, etc.

Spell to Write and Read provides the big picture for teaching an integrated four-to-six year language arts program. Teachers of all grades follow the first eleven steps in SWR then start the regular lessons in The WISE Guide, coming back to SWR as directed in the Wise Spelling Lists.
